Lifetime Achievement Award, National Neonatology Forum
Being felicitated by Dr. M.K.C. Nair VC, Kerala University of Health Sciences, for recognition of my contributions to the newborn health in India and the growth of National Neonatology Forum (NNF).
Annual Conference of International Neonatology Association and National Neonatology Forum. 11th Dec. 2015.
Commendations from Dignitaries
These leaders of Indian Pediatrics and neonatology considered my achievements formidable because they were achieved in a fund-crunched, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) run hospital, which was a non-teaching institution. More so, because it was achieved in a place where nothing in newborn care existed, and no organized newborn care existed in the country at that time.
Professor B.N.S. Walia (2012)
Profesor B.N.S. Walia, Director, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science and Education made an extra-ordinary comment after my presentation on “Organization of Level II Neonatal Care Unit in India” in which I showed many infrastructures, equipments and working of my unit. “What Dipak Guha has achieved in an MCD run hospital, even AIIMS and PGI should be envious of his achievements and his Newborn Intensive Care unit.”
Dr. Leo Stern & Dr. William Oh
Many neonatologists of International repute visited my neonatal unit and said many encouraging words. It was a joy when I received a letter from the very eminent neonatologists, Drs. Leo Stern and William Oh from the Brown University Medical School, USA. “We are most impressed with what you have been able to do under conditions which we would suspect are as trying for you as they are amazing for those of us who are not obliged to work under such handicaps in order to achieve what all of us would like to be able to do. You have not only our compliments but respect and admiration as well. We will like to visit your unit again.” He kept his promise and visited the unit again in 1985, and continued his association with me enriching my knowledge till his unfortunate demise.
Professor Vinod Bhutani, Stanford University School of Medicine (1987)
Dr. Bhutani visited my newborn care unit at Kasturba Hospital in 1987 on the recommendation of Dr. Sagar. I organized a grand round with the postgraduate students from different hospitals at Kasturba Hospital during his visit. He commented, “It seems that I am taking a round in an US university hospital.”
Impressed, he instantly offered to plan and organize an Indo-U.S. workshop in Neonatology. In October of 1988, as conceived and planned by him, we had one of the most successful workshops on ‘Neonatal Respiratory problems’ at Kasturba Hospital.
Professor Farber (1977)
The famous author of 'Farber’s Principles of Basic Pediatrics', UK, after attending the International Congress of Pediatrics held in Delhi, 1977, said: “Hats off to You Dipak. You have done an incredibly wonderful job as Transport Secretary.”
Professor O. N. Bhakhoo, HOD, Dept. of Pediatrics, PGI, Chandigarh, India (1975)
On his first visit to my NICU at Kasturba Hospital in 1975 said, "I am in love with Dipak's Unit. Superb!" He made it a point to visit my unit whenever he was in Delhi and recommended many others to visit and see what could be done in a non-teaching hospital with passion and work hard.
Dr. Karan Singh (1975)
When Mr. Karan Singh, the then Minister of Health, Government of India, and Mrs. Karan Singh visited my the state-of-the-art Newborn Care Unit they said: “We have not seen anything like this before! This newborn intensive care unit is exceptionally of high quality. We hope the MCD and the hospital officials will see to it that Dr. Guha and his team get all the help and funds he needs in future”. As a result, I never had any problems in getting the funds approved from any department in the MCD, and I utilized that goodwill for the development of care of newborns in Kasturba Hospital.
